I painted the eggs of the Eurasian Treecreeper on this antique Egyptian postcard. One egg is resting against the back of the Sphinx, and the other egg is against a collaged tree. I also included other Egyptian ephemera. This card is mounted on an acid-free museum mat. Eurasian Treecreepers are found in the northern hemisphere, south to Nicaragua, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. They build nests behind the loose bark of trees, tree holes, in a crevice of a wall, or perhaps behind the head of the Sphinx.

This is a very old postcard from Egypt. I painted Egypt's Sacred Ibis Egg in gouache, as if it's just as spectacular as the pyramid in the background. I then collaged using papers and an antique postage stamp. I loved the way the camel and visitors cast a shadow on the wall along the walkway to the pyramid.

For this collage and painted piece I started with an antique French document, of which I collaged on an antique scrap art bird with an antique postage stamp. I collaged on borders of marbled and rice papers. At the top of the piece is an antique soap label 'Savon du Congo', which is mounted over a transferred engraved label. The bottom is done the same way with an antique scrap art feather. I then painted the series of African bird eggs with gouache. Lastly, I applied gold leaf to each side border.

And I love the intermingling of the feathers with the script. I collaged on a piece of another French letter dated 1890, a French stamp, art paper for the border, a piece of Italian marbled paper, and a 'Par Avion' stamp. I painted this Great Horned Owl Feather (actual size) on an antique letter dated 1851, in watercolor and gouache. The Great Horned Owl flies silently, it's feathers delicately fringed and soft. This feather is painted with many layers of paint to create a soft texture, as if it just landed on this French letter.

I painted this collection of Australian Bird Eggs in watercolor and gouache on an Australian envelope dated 1958. After painting, I collaged on the antique scrap art bird, and the small strip of Italian marbled paper that closes the envelope. I then scrumbled on the gouache and watercolors. One of the eggs on this envelope is of the Great Bowerbird. The Bowerbird is very unique. The male creates a courtship bower consisting of a vertical twig pathway beautifully decorated with bright objects, sometimes all blue. The objects usually consist of pieces of glass, snail shells, dried leaves, berries, sea shells, and stones. The nest is then built in a treefork hidden amongst the foliage located in a monsoon forest, rainforest, or in the Australian woodland.

The Osprey is located worldwide. A resident of Sicily, it can be found living in the wooded countryside near lakes and rivers. It winters near large expanses of fresh, brackish, or salt water. We have Ospreys here on our California coast that fly up from the ocean to nest high up in the branches of our tall redwoods. I painted on this antique Italian postcard using gouache and watercolor. Then collaged on it using antique ephemera including a piece of an Italian envelope, Italian stamp, and money receipt. I also collaged with a torn piece of marbled paper that I collected on a trip to Venice.

The Crested Serpent Eagle is found throughout the forests and woodlands of southeast Asia, Indonesia, and from India to South China. This beautiful reddish-brown bird lays a single egg in a relatively small nest for an eagle. The nest is built solely of sticks and can be found in wooded areas. I painted this in watercolor and gouache on an antique postcard. I then collaged with antique ephemera including, stamps from India, letter from India, and floral wallpaper.

This Egyptian Vulture Egg is from a small species of vultures found in the Middle East, India, Africa, and Southern Europe. The Egyptian Vulture roosts on crags in open country. It builds its nest out of sticks lining it with fur, skins, rags, papers, and anything else it can find. And the antique ephemera I found in my studio to create this postcard, postage stamps, a piece of an old letter, and wallpaper. I painted on this Egyptian postcard using gouache and watercolor. At the end I added touches of gold leaf.

I collaged on an antique 1903 French Postcard. I used antique ephemera including, wallpaper, a French letter written on vellum, money, and an advertising card. After applying all the collage elements, I painted the Auk egg (actual size) in gouache, and then scrumbled on many colors over the entire card. Auks lay their egg (1 or 2) on a cliffs edge. This is the reason why the egg is pointed on one side, so that it can withstand wind. The egg will just spin around instead of falling off the cliff. The Little Auk is also called Sea Dove.

The first time I painted this butterfly from my collection, was when I was working on the cover of my book 'Dragonfly Beetle Butterfly Bee.' I was so amazed by its size and the intense brilliant green on its wings.

This brilliant butterfly can be seen sailing through the rain forests of Brazil. The iridescence of the wings turn from shades of violet, blue, turquoise, and green. The underside of this butterfly is a dull brown with many eye spots. I painted this Morpho on an antique postcard, using watercolor and gouache to create the iridescence. I then collaged with antique ephemera, including wallpaper, clippings from a Brazilian stock certificate dated 1947, and a 1930 postage stamp.

Returning from a trip to Italy, my cousin handed me a very small box that read 'Gucci' across the top. Inside was the most beautiful dragonfly with golden wings. So I decided to paint this special Italian dragonfly in flight over ancient Venice, using watercolor and gouache. I then collaged with antique ephemera, including clippings of a letter, wallpaper, and a stamp with the image of Leonardo da Vinci. I also used clippings that I found in Italy of scenes of ancient Venice. To enhance the postcard I painted an atmosphere using rich Italian colors.

When I first spotted this postcard from the 1930's, what caught my eye was the old ruins and landscape. On the postcard I collaged several pieces of antique ephemera, including clippings of letters, a small section of a map, and postage stamps. I included two stamps, one very old stamp from Hungary. The final touch was texturing and painting the atmosphere with gouache and watercolor paint.

I was inspired by the serenity of this postcard. It was just a simple black and white antique postcard of a rocky shore. I stained and painted the background to give it color. Then, with a torn piece of an antique letter I created the swath of beach that seems to disappear into the distance. The antique stamps and map add a little mystery. The Italian stamp on the lower right is dated 1891-96.

For this Italian postcard dated 1904 (on back), I painted a pressed Rhodophyta Seaweed. I was inspired by the botanists who collected, pressed, and mounted plants on sheets of paper that were then bound into books called 'Herbaria'. I painted the seaweed and background with watercolor and gouache. Surrounding the seaweed I collaged with antique ephemera, including a clipping of a vellum letter, stamps, and a vellum label identifying the seaweed. I added flecks of brilliant gold gouache to the final background.

I painted this owl feather on a 1924 postcard from Netherland. On the postcard I collaged several pieces of antique ephemera, including a letter with a signature, a gummed label, and a fabric letter 'O'. The title 'OWL' was printed on the card using the 'superior solid rubber type printer' from 1892. I became fascinated with painting feathers while working on the cover of my book 'Bird Egg Feather Nest'. The entire cover is decorated with floating feathers. Painting the feather of an owl requires many thin layers of paint to create the soft texture. Owl feathers are softly textured and fringed to give the bird its silent flight.

I painted this Swallowtail Butterfly in watercolor and gouache on an antique French postcard. The flower is collaged on and is from a piece of antique scrap art. The butterfly comes from my collection that I gathered when working on my book 'Dragonfly Beetle Butterfly Bee'. Like all butterflies, this swallowtail tastes or smells with its feet which helps it to select the plant it feeds on. This butterfly is almost ready to land on this flower to see if it is the right one.

I painted this Metallic Wood Beetle on an antique postcard using watercolor and gouache. I loved recreating the iridescence on the body and wing casings, and also the reflected colors from the wings on the card. I wanted to give the impression that this beetle is just taking off. I addressed this card to Jean Henri Fabre, my favorite French entomologist (1823-1915) because I was so inspired by his work when I visited his home/museum in France while working on my book "Dragonfly Beetle Butterfly Bee".
